Atlantic Jazz Lab Orchestra
Atlantic Jazz Lab Orchestra (AJLO) is a jazz orchestra founded in 2017 as the Orquesta de Jazz del Atlántico, part of the Laboratorio Atlántico de Jazz y Nuevas Músicas, an organisation devoted to promoting jazz in, for and from the Canary Islands.
The AJLO is led by trumpeter Natanael Ramos, one of the outstanding musicians of his generation. Beyond his work directing the orchestra, Ramos is also a composer, arranger and teacher, and has won several awards, among them first prize for Big Band Composition from the Granada Jazz Association and the SGAE Foundation in 2015.
The orchestra brings together some of the finest and most respected jazz musicians in the country, with a repertoire that runs from the classics —Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Frank Sinatra— to new compositions and arrangements by writers such as Kenny Wheeler, Chris Kase, Miguel Blanco and Peter Beets. It has toured all of the Canary Islands and other parts of Spain, and appeared at festivals including the Canary Islands International Music Festival and the Canary Islands International Jazz Festival.
Beyond the stage, the AJLO is committed to music education and runs many programmes and workshops for young musicians and students. Its discography opens with Garajonay Suite, and a second album with Esther van Hees is on the way, titled It’s Too Darn Hot!
